Make responsibilities explicit.

Look at how each provider moves from a security signal to investigation, escalation and action.

Signals in scope

Check coverage across endpoint, identity, cloud and your existing security tools.

Who takes action

Distinguish notification from active response, and agree on escalation and approval boundaries.

Service boundaries

Compare reporting, integrations, commercial scope and the work retained by your internal team.

Make the service agreement part of the comparison.

Arctic Wolf, CrowdStrike Falcon Complete and Huntress are starting points for a provider conversation. Compare the specific service: telemetry sources, investigation, containment authority and escalation. If your approach uses Microsoft Sentinel, identify the actual managed service provider and its scope; the platform name alone does not identify who delivers the service.

ITVC provides evaluation and procurement guidance. Managed detection and response is delivered by the selected provider, not an ITVC-operated SOC.

Before you choose

MDR provider buying questions.

What should we ask an MDR provider?

Ask which signals it monitors, who investigates, what actions it can take without approval and how urgent issues reach your team. Request the operating hours, response commitments, exclusions and reporting in writing. Compare the specific agreement rather than assuming all managed services include the same response.

Can MDR work with our existing security tools?

It depends on the provider’s supported integrations and service scope. Share your endpoint, identity, cloud and logging tools before choosing. Establish whether an integration supplies usable investigation data, enables response actions or simply forwards an alert.

Who delivers and owns the response?

The selected provider delivers the managed service. ITVC helps with evaluation and procurement, not an ITVC-operated SOC. Your team and the provider should agree on containment authority, approvals, contacts and recovery responsibilities before the service starts.
